How to Save Money on a Rental Car

If your own vehicle is out of commission for the time being and you live in an area where you need one, then a rental car is your best option. However, if this is your first time acquiring a rental car, you may not know what you’re getting into. Rental cars are not free, but you can certainly save money on them. You might also be able to combine points, however, it’s always best to check with the rental car agency first. Read on to learn how to save money on a rental car.

Using Points and Miles

The most common and effective way to save money with a rental car is by using points. There are two ways to redeem points for your rental car. The first way is to use a credit card that gives you reward points that you can use for travel expenses. These credit cards include Discover Miles, Capital One Venture Rewards, and Barclaycard Arrival Mastercard. The second way is to redeem any points you may have accumulated through booking with hotels and scheduling flights with airlines.

No Additional Drivers

Another way to save money on your rental car is to not include any additional drivers. Granted, this doesn’t include anyone who is under 25, although this may vary based on your location. However, keep in mind that you’ll be required to pay extra fees for adding other drivers to your rental agreement. If you plan on having someone else drive your rental car, remember to let the dealership know ahead of time. That way should anything occur, the person who drove the car will be held responsible.

Keep an Eye Out for an Upsell

One of the most common reasons why people pay too much for their rental car is because the dealership is trying to up-sell. Don’t let their enthusiasm fool you into getting a car you don’t need as it probably costs more than the one you were hoping to get. The purpose of a rental car is to help you get around until yours is back in your possession, so you don’t need anything fancy. Make sure to stick to your original plan and don’t let the dealer convince you otherwise.

Renting a car is handy, but it can also be costly. There’s no need to pay an exuberant amount of money for a rental car, especially since you probably already have one. Try to stick to these tips to ensure you’re spending the least amount of money on a rental car.
