How to Protect Yourself From the Sun on Your Trip


From hiking in the mountains to walking on the beach, international travel often means spending lots of time outdoors. Taking precautions to protect yourself from the sun can help you get the most out of your trip and avoid a painful sunburn. This guide will help you understand how to prepare for your outdoor adventures before you leave home.


Bring Sunscreen

Packing sunscreen in your luggage will save you time at your destination. In general, sunscreen should be applied roughly 30 minutes prior to going outside, and it needs to be re-applied every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. According to Viles & Beckman, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends at least SPF 30 for the best protection. Be sure to apply sunscreen to all areas of exposed skin, including the face, ears, neck, hands, and feet.


Wear Hats

Choosing a wide-brimmed hat is recommended, and doctors believe that every extra inch of hat brim could reduce your risk of skin cancer by an additional 10 percent. Breathable materials like straw and cotton can make wearing a hat more comfortable, and hats are a great option for showcasing your personal style.


Bring Sunglasses

Sunglasses prevent you from squinting in the sun and let you soak up all the beautiful sights at your destination. Since you can’t apply sunscreen to your eyes, sunglasses are a crucial way to reduce your risk of cataracts and other eye issues that are associated with sun exposure, according to the American Academy of Opthalmology. Before you purchase new sunglasses for your trip, look for a sticker or label on the item that certifies that the glasses protect against 100 percent of ultraviolet rays. Opting for wraparound or oversized glasses will provide more protection, and consider wearing polarized lenses to reduce glare while driving or during water sports.


Run for the Shade


According to Ohioans Home Healthcare, the sun’s rays are strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. These hours are typically the busiest times for beaches, outdoor activities, and sightseeing. If you need to be outside during these times while on your trip, make plans to take regular breaks in shady areas. For example, you could choose to eat lunch under a shady tree. You might also want to consider alternating between outdoor and indoor activities. Spending some indoor time in museums or shopping centers in between trips to the beach is an ideal way to start.
